My beautiful mother

Thirteen Things about my mother

1 She is loves all her children and grandchildren like a mother bear.

Mom, Dad, Kiara, Braden and myself at the Christmas Tree Farm

2. She is very giving when she finds out you need something
3. She is a great worker. She stayed at home and babysat till I was twelve then went to school to become a medical assistant. She has worked in doctors offices ever since.
4. She loves beautiful things in nature
5. She loves taking pictures and video's and helps me find the pictures I need on many occasions, even staying up late past her bedtime to help me.
6. She loves the ocean and will even go to the ocean to take pictures of it all by herself

My Mom as a baby

7. She taught us to respect others mail and purses. I still cant even peek at the insides of another persons purse or mail.
8. She taught us to try as much as possible to be fair. She always counted the presents at Christmas time to make sure we all got the same amount. I still do that for my kids.
9. She hates having her picture taken

At the Pumpkin Patch they have this little cabin we get pics at.

10. She loves her country. 4th of July is a special holiday for her, and we wont even be here to celebrate as we will be on a mission trip this year :(
11. She will come and sit with you in the emergency room or hospital room to keep you company

My Mom with my daughter when she was small

12. Even though she didn't care for cooking she found several dishes we all liked and those have become our favorite dishes. I really admire her for that as I know a lot of women who won't even try. She even makes strawberry jam for my dad and used to make pies. Pretty good when thats not her thing.
13. She worries about us. She worries that she worries too much, but isn't nice when you have someone to worry about you? I think so....Love you MOM!

Thursday Thirteen: A Tribute to My Dad

Thirteen Things about A Tribute to My Dad

1. My Dad is a great Christian. He lives by the golden rule, studies his bible everyday and is a great example to everyone

My Dad and I in Arizona.

2. My Dad follows the good health habits. He doesn't eat between meals, eats breakfast regularly, maintains a proper weight, gets regular exercise through his daily activities, does not drink or smoke and tries to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night

My Dad playing college basketball at Andrews University. He is number 9.

3. My Dad has great work habits. He put 200 percent into his 40 plus years as a church school teacher. Church schools teachers do not get paid extra for camping trips, evening activites or sports events. He did them all willingly. His motto was "If a job is worth doing, then it is worth doing right".

My Dad at his Masters in Education ceremony. He is the second one in a gown.

4. My Dad has a good balance between work and play. His motto was always work before play, but somehow we were always riding the motor cycle, down at the beach or on a family vacation.

My Dad and I on his motorcycle. He said I used to fall asleep so he would hold onto my back with one arm, and drive with the other.

5. My Dad took us on fun vacations. Like I said before, Church School teachers are not paid the best, but my dad managed to save money and take us on vacations across the US, visiting all the special places like Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Grand Canyon etc, to ultimately end up visiting family. We also went on a lot of camping trips.

My dad on a mule for the trip down the Grand Canyon this last summer. He is 70 years old!

6. My Dad instilled self esteem in us, by introducing us as if we were the Queen of England's children. You could "feel" how proud he was even if our hair was messy and our clothes dirty from playing. Th other day we went to the grocery store and he very proudly told the cashier that I was his daughter. How special is that?

My Dad and I in my favorite car.

7. My Dad is the King of money management. He saves up for all the major appliances, car repairs and home repairs that will be needed in the future, saves for vacations and even paid money every month for 3 years, till he owned a grandfather clock, that he gave my mother for their wedding anniversary. He didn't bring it home and then make payments. He just took the money down to the store till it was all paid off then brought the clock home.

My Dad and Mom the year they got Married 1960

8. My Dad has great time management. You can tell what time it is by when he eats, brushes his teeth, and goes to bed. He is ALWAYS early for an appointment.

My Dad camping. He even kept up his routines in the wilderness.

9. My Dad will drop everything to help his children out. Need a large piece of furniture brought home? He is picking up the trailer and there in 10 minutes flat. Need a ride somewhere? He's the guy. Need help with something in the yard or with the house? He's your handyman. Someday when the teens are gone and the schedule is more free I hope to be as fast to respond to what he needs.

My Dad and I waiting for our turn to parasail in Hawaii 2003

10. My Dad is president of "National Bank of Dad". I owe him enough to keep him in a dough a year or two.

My Dad, brother and I in 1969. My sister Laughing Mommy was not born yet.

11. My Dad changed history. Not the book type of history, but family history. Families tend to make the same mistakes down through the generations. My Dad changed all that so we could grow up with a Mom and Dad, always had food, love, medical, dental, orthodontia, vacations, and even asked the dentist to do a procedure which at that time had not been tried yet. I had big white spots on my two front teeth and when my braces came off I cried and cried so my Dad convinced the orthodontist to to resurface them. Which looked great!

12. My Dad worked hard to give us kids a Christian education. He was a teacher but in the summers he would work doing landscaping so we would have enough money for school the next year.

My Dad teaching.

13. Final but a very important thing....and a continuing joke in the family.....When Dad is with you....NEVER FORGET THE SANDWICHES!

Thank you Mom for helping me find all the pictures! Remind Dad to visit my blog tomorrow morning!

Thursday Thirteen ED 20

Thirteen Things about Faith

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see(Hebrews 11:1-3)

1. Luke 12:28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!

2. Luke 17:6 If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you

3. Luke 17:19 Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."

4. 1 Corinthians 16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong

5. Acts 27:25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

6. Romans 3:22-24 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

7. Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

8. Romans 3:31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.

9. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast.

10. Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

11. Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

12. Romans 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

13. 1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

(Picture is either me or my sister parasailing)

Thirteen Things about The Time Change

1. Why are we still doing this? I understand it was so the farmers would have more daylight hours. Why is it that they cant just get up when the sun does? Who cares if that is 5 am or 6am?
2. It gets harder every year to adjust
3. The children are tired
4. Teachers don't like it, cause they say the children are tired and misbehave more
5. The dogs' schedule is all messed up. If they are used to going outside to do their business at 6 am then after the time change they still want to do it at 6 am, however this is now 7am and they have already eaten and been out twice. So back to the "no messes in the house" training.
7. People at work are tired and cranky
8. There is place in Arizona that refuses to change the time. Yeah for them and any other area that might not do it
9. Losing an hour of sleep is never a good thing. It should always be a "fall back" sort of thing. I realize in theory it wouldn't work but it my mind I could use a "fall back" every month.
10. Its hard to get a kid on a schedule, and to do a time change smoothly, you have to chnage the bed time by 10 minutes a day. A lot of work for an unnecessary thing
11. It just "feels" wrong
12. There are too many clocks to change, and for weeks I am thinking is this one on the right time or that one?
13. ITS just plain DUMB. Give me a good reason for it and I might jump on board.

Visit my blog (by clicking on the "memory foam topper trouble in the sidebar) to vote on whether I should keep the memory foam folded on my side of the bed or take it all the way off.

Thirteen Things about My sister

Thank you to Fruity Spirit for the cute header!

1. She is very classy. She usually does not wear sweats in public however being her sister I have seen her in sweats and She can, and does, look classy even in sweats! Our Grandma used to say she was "a perfect specimen of a human being" and then say "oh, you are a nice person too" OUCH! However I understood what she meant, because some people are just more graceful and together than others. I notice that `with my residents at work too. I have been trying to get some of it to wear off on me.....

2. She has a porcelain complexion. (She will disagree that this is a good thing, as she thinks I stole all the pigment in the family) I have gotten numerous compliments on my sisters beautiful porcelain skin.

3. She is a great mom. She does an excellent job dressing, feeding, bathing, caring and making life fun for her little girls.

4. She is good at getting pictures of her girls and everyone else for that matter. She blogs and writes letters to her girls so they will be able to see what they were like as a baby and child. She even encouraged me to get a picture of the dinner I made for my son and his girlfriend on Valentines Day. I thought I was too busy with the food, but I managed to get one and I know I will be so happy I got it.

5. She is friendly. She has lots of really good friends and is really good at keeping in touch with them

6. She is giving. She will help you out whenever she can and always tries to bring more than her share to family gatherings. (we try to get her to bring less)

7. She perseveres. She had one child who spewed large amounts of milk all down her side during breast feeding, but she continued on. She also battled yeast and hives at one point without giving up

8. She loves to laugh. We have laughed till our sides ached

9. She sets a "Martha Stewart" worthy holiday table and even adds in "crackers" and personalized candle holders for each family member. And she is a great cook.

10. She has a talent with buying clothes that are classy and in style.

11. She knows what she likes. Decisions seem to come easy to her

12. She is organized. Even her junk drawer is perfectly organized

13. She is my sister. The best of all the thirteen things. When she was 3 and I was 11 she has the chicken pox virus go into her blood stream and settle in her hip. She was in the hospital and in traction. My parents were so worried that they forgot to tell my brother and I that she was okay. I thought she was going to die. I begged God to save her and he did. And I am soooooo glad. We are the best of friends.

Thurday Thirteen Ed 15

Thank you to Headmeister for the Header!

Thirteen Things...I get teased about

1. My spelling. I can spell medical terms such as oophorectomy and cholecystectomy but I misspell sattelyte and definately.

2. My pronunciation. I blame it on the fact that I was in that window of children who never got phonics, but who knows. At least my hubby has the same difficulty.

3. I make up words and use them frequently

4. My typing skills. I have gotten pretty fast with messaging and blogging but ask me to type a preprinted form and I am pretty slow. I got distracted in typing class by a really cute boy with blonde hair and green eyes. What can I say? That was 7 to 10th grade, it didn't seem that important back then.

5. My need to take a lot of things with me when I travel. What can I say other than I notice no one made fun of Rose, the girl on Titanic, when she showed up with everything from framed pictures to her own servants.

6. I carry a lot of stuff with me where ever I go. (Sometimes I am called bag lady) But I NEED my purse, my camera, my books and paper and pen, sometimes my computer. I cant stand being bored cause there is so much to do!

7. The amount of e-mails in my in box. I just cant keep up with them. I do searches for the important things, but I do have around 3000 to 4000 at any one time. I am sure that will get better, just give me time.

8. My junk. I have a lot of stuff. Once again what can I say, every object "could" be used at some point. I am working on this.

9. Making fun of something I have not been exposed to yet. I do not believe that most people are stupid, its just that they haven't had the opportunity to learn that particular thing yet. "I know what I know if you know what I mean"

10. Challenge my nursing knowledge (don't argue medical stuff with a nurse. If I don't know something I will tell you)

11. My lack of direction. I do not pay attention to where I am going unless I am driving. Just because you have driven me there 10 times doesn't mean I will know how to get there. There is so much going on in my mind, I just don't register the directions.

12. Things I have said in the past. I reserve the right to change my mind at any given point depending upon new information I may have acquired or just because my circumstances have changed

13. What I haven't been able to accomplish. I have a limited supply of energy and I work as hard as I can to get as much done as possible, but I am one of those people who need 8 to 9 hours of sleep and I wear out in the evening hours.

Okay that is all the "dirt" on me. However without those things I would not be me, so go ahead, poke fun. I am getting used to it. (Smiling)

Thirteen Things about Alzheimers Residents

Thank you to Casa Sosegad for the header!

I work in an Alzheimers Dementia Care Unit and I adore the residents I work with. Especially when they come up with witty comments, interesting comebacks, and compliments. If you have a relative with Alzheimers this list might not be for you, as it is sad to see your loved one go downhill, but for the caregivers and nurses these comments make us smile. We only know the person after they have Alzheimers so we can love them where they are at, without the feeling of loss.

Witty Comments:

1…. "I don't need a bath" (odor indicates otherwise)

2. "I haven't had anything to eat all day" (after exiting the dining room and eating a full meal)

3. "We haven't met have we" (I have talked to this one everyday for 2 years about the news, weather etc)

4. "Can I come in?" (means can I come sit by you and keep you company)

5. "Its nice to lose your mind cause each day brings new things" (said to office staff one morning)

6.
Resident: "I want a pumpkin" Staff: "look in your bag" Resident: "Wow how did that get in there?" (at the pumpkin patch after picking pumpkins)

Comebacks:

7.. "Am I supposed to be impressed?" (after my husband sang to them to decrease the sundowners) (sundowners happens usually in the evening when the sun is going down and the residents get more restless and more confused)

8. "If I wanted you to speak I would have thrown you a bone" (after asking a resident where she was hurting)

9. "I have a right to get up and walk and I have a right to fall" (from a former nurse and she is right. It's in the Residents Bill of Rights)

Compliments: (I received a lot of compliments as a nurse in hospital and home settings but never as many as I do now. Heres a small sampling)

10. "Thank you pretty girl" (everyday after I ask how a certain lady is doing)

11. "Did you give that shot already? I didn't even feel a thing" (after almost every injection I give)

12. She is
THE NURSE (Said from one resident to another as if I am the Queen of England)

BEST EVER comment:

13. My all time favorite "I thank God everyday that I do not have Alzheimers" (Spoken by an Alzheimers resident to her table mates who also have Alzheimers)

Thirteen Things about MY FAVORITE SONGS

Thank you to Chaotic Mom for the beautiful header!

If you have never tried listening to PRAISE music you are really missing out on some wonderful music. The newer praise music has rythym, great uplifting lyrics, and wont leave you with the following (I actually like most all types of music)

Blues: Feeling blue of course
Rock: Feeling great unless you break up with someone then you realize they all make you cry
Country: Play it backwards to get your wife back, children back, job back and dog back
New Age: Feeling a little spacey
Hip Hop: What was that they were saying?
Rap: Try my Sunday Festivus instead, check last weeks Festivus post and come back on Sunday to join in

Thirteen of my favorite praise songs (if you haven't heard them then listen and soon, they are so uplifting. Better than Prozac, I promise)

1.My God is an Awesome God by Rich Mulliens (because its the first song my husband sang in front of church and it was so good people stopped talking in the foyer to ask “who is that?”)
2.Indescribable by Chris Tomlin (My Daughters Favorite)
3.He Reigns by the News Boys (I had a dream where I saw Jesus returning in the clouds and this song was playing)
4.Prince of Peace by Michael W Smith
5.I can only imagine by Mercy Me or Casting Crowns (Great song with a bit of country)
6.Blessed be by Tree 63 (because i never get tired of hearing my husband sing it)
7.Golden City by Phil Baggaley & Ian Blythe (because its the most recent one my husband has sung and it was so awesome!)
8.Days of Elijah by Robin Mark
9.How Can I Keep from Singing your praise by Chris Tonlin
10.Never Gonna stop by Tommy Walker
11.Everlasting God by Brenton Brown
12. Shine on by Need to Breathe
13. All Day by Hillsong United

Thirteen Things that should never be said

Thank you to Le Laquet for the header!
Here are a few of the comments that have been said to my sister, my self and my daughter....

1.You look awful! (Even if you were sick, this comment can make you feel your worst)
2.So when is the baby due? (I have been asked this question when I was skinny and wore a size 6 and worked on my abs at a gym 6 days a week)
3.When are you and your hubby going to have kids? (Some may be waiting but others may be infertile and this question will bring tears to their eyes)
4.Have you gained weight? (Another depressing comment as everyone I know, does not set out to GAIN weight)
5.You used to live in a mobile home didn't you? (puts you back in your place, if you have ever had to live in one)
6.You could do better. (when talking about another persons choice of boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse)
7.Its time to retire that shirt. It makes you look old. (if you didn't realize you were old this comment will make you feel it)
8.Your daughter has such dark hair! Is she adopted?" (Just because mom has light hair doesn't mean dad does)
9.Guess what! We are having a baby! Hey, hows the infertility treatments going?" (self explanatory)
10.Your daughter has such dark hair! Is her dad......????" (Is her dad what? Dark haired? Why yes, he is!)" (Shamefully inappropriate)
11."You just need to relax... then you will get pregnant." (appropriate only for newlyweds that have been trying for less than a month)
12.How much weight have you lost? Wow! You must feel SO much better now! (no actually I feel about the same, I might feel great when I am a size 2 however)
13.Do you have my size 2 jeans? (Why I thought I put on my size 14 jeans this morning but could you check the tag back there? )

Thirteen Things about My New Years Resolutions

1. Listen to “Its just another New Years Eve” by Barry Manilow like my sis and I have done for years, and it just doesn't feel right till I hear it. And now I am adding Clay Aiken singing “What are you doing New Years Eve”

2. Have someone wake me up to see the ball drop like every year since I was a kid, because try as I might I just cant stay awake

3. Go completely vegan, I am almost there I just have a hard time giving up the cheese pizza!

4. Sugary items down to no more than once a week. I am finding out sugar causes cancer, violence and ages the skin!

5. Read my entire bible this year. I always make a great start but never finish all the way

6. Stay off caffeine except for “stay awake” emergencies. And no making up an emergency just to get some

7. De junk my entire house, garage, and shed (no good place for a pile of junk)

8. Plant raspberry bushes (you cant go wrong with a raspberry and then I will have blueberries, cherries and raspberries)

9.Make a rose garden Nothing better than roses on the kitchen table anytime you want.

10.Put more pictures on my blog because the pictures are the interesting things.

11. Save more money to help the poor at Christmas time. 50 percent more than this year

12. Write more thank yous
13. Post a Thursday Thirteen every week!

Thursday Thirteen ed 10

Thirteen Things I will say YES to my teens about

(a little obsessive but the ideas do cross my mind)

1. Daughter age 13: “Can I go to the movies alone with my boyfriend?” Yes, when you are 18.
2. Son age 15: “Can I drive in the freezing rain and black ice with my drivers permit?” Yes, once you have been properly trained and we are in an empty parking lot with no lampposts in site.
3. Sugar o holic Son age 15: “Can I have ice cream for breakfast?” Yes, if you eat 3 banana’s an apple and an orange first.”
4. Both kids; “Can I stay up all night long on a school night?” Yes, when you are in college.
5. Daughter age 13 wearing a tight shirt with cleavage showing: “Can I go to the mall with my friends?” Yes, once you change your clothing, and wear a turtle neck shirt that is not form fitting.
6. Daughter age 13: “ Can I run up the cell phone bill to unafforadable levels?” Yes, but we will be selling your video/picture/MP3 phone on e bay and getting you a basic cricket phone.
7. Daughter age 13: “Can you get off early from work to go pick up my boyfriend (40 minute trip) and take us all to the movies. Then take him home after?” Yes, I did this one….
8. Daughter age 13: “Can you buy my friends presents” Yes, once you pay for part of it or help out at home
9. Son age 15: “Can my girlfriend come over for New Years and stay the night?” Since there is no way for her to get home (she lives an hour away) then YES, but there will be alarms installed on your window and door. And on the room she is staying in. Plus visual, auditory and tactile deterrents from getting up in the night for a make out session.
10. Son age 15: “Can I walk from your work down to the stores” (through a gang section of town) Yes, if we follow you ready to call 911 a the slightest hint of gang activity.
11. Son age 15: “Can I pretend that I am in trouble so I wont be embarrased to be sitting by my parents” Yes anything you want to have you around a little longer!
12. Both: Can you buy it and then I will earn it?” Yes, if you earn it first and then I buy it.
13. Both: Can you? Can you? Can you? YES YES YES as I long as I am alive I will say yes!

7. Buy gift certificates for the family we are helping this Christmas.
8. Find my niece the assessories to the toy I bought her, cause of course they do not COME WITH IT! ARGH
9. Find the lighted outdoor Christmas tree and get it plugged in becasue everyone on our street has one and I like to feel like I belong.
10. Count the presents, cost of the presents, number of the presents and size of the presents to make sure everything is as fair as possible
11. Get the stocking stuffers ready to go in the stockings

Thursday Thirteen ed 8

Thirteen Things about Showing kids how to "share" Christmas

1. Brighten someone's Holiday by doing the "12 days of Christmas" for them. ( write creative notes and improvise such as, day one give a mini tree with a bird in it and a can of pears-more on my blog about this one)
2. Find a family with kids that cannot afford Christmas and get them presents and food (We save the money from returning pop cans all year and we are lucky enough to get cans donated to us as well)
3. Give money, food or "stuff" to your local shelter
4. Give to a charity. ADRA is a really good one and has a "Really Useful Gift Catalog" where you can choose items from 2 dollars and on up to purchase. It tells what you are buying and what country it will be used in.(www.Adra.org)
5. Write notes of appreciation to other members in your family or to friends
6. Find a "giving tree" and choose kids that are around your childrens same ages, then buy the Christmas presents they are wishing for. (Malls and shopping centers will have these tree's)
7. Invite someone over for Christmas dinner that could never return the favor
8. Offer to babysit for a single parent that needs to go shopping without the kids
9. Give food to a local food share program
10. Clean out the coat closet and donate your good used coats to a shelter.
11. Call a local Residential Care Center or Nursing home and ask if there is a resident without involved family members and ask what you could get them for Christmas.
12. Ask your pastor if someone in your church is lonely, then visit them
13. Bake cookies or Pumpkin bread and take to all your neighbors

Thursday Thirteen: 13 great things to help with the teen years ed 5

1. Book: 5 Love Languages of Teens by Gary Chapman (learn how your teen shows love and recieves love--It may be different from what you think it is)
2. Book: Parenting your out of Control Teen by Scott P Sells. I wish they would change the name of this one. It is great for even teens that are not out of Control. Shows you how to take care of a variety of problems such as disrespect and frees Mom from all the nagging. It also shows how to show your teen the positive things they are doing)
3. Date-time with Mom or Dad night. Special time alone with you and your teen. Let them pick the activity. Guarenteed to get them talking after the first few "dates"
4. Online- www.byparents-forparents.com deals with the difficult issues as well as minor issues.
5. Online- Tips for parenting teens at www.buzzle.com
6. Online- www.parentingteens.com
7. Online-www.ncfy.com/publications/tips/tips.htm
8. Hang on-When they pull away do what ever you have to pull them back into the family.
9. Snoop-Get a good program that records every site that your computer goes to, blocks undesirable sites and a program to recover deleted items for the tricky "computer smart" ones
10. Loosen up-When appropriate "loosen the reins" a bit, with more freedoms for good behavior and less for undesirable behavior
11. Driving: check out www.familycircle.com and read the article on "crash proofing your teen". Very good advice on raising the chances your teen will stay out of a serious crash
12. Words-Tell them you love them everyday
13. Divine help-Pray for them everyday and anytime you feel you need extra
